Goliath Christmas

3:23 PM

When we flew back in to Albuquerque the Sunday morning after Christmas, after our California trip, we were greeted with closed roads due to a snow storm that had passed through the evening before. That night we bunked out in a hotel in Albuquerque, waiting for the highways to open. They didn't until after noon the next day. We passed lots of abandoned cars on the side of the highway on our drive, but the roads themselves had been well cleared. It was not until we got to Roswell itself that we had problems maneuvering. Cars were abandoned left and right, some in the middle of Main Street. We had planned on picking up a shovel in town, but it then became our goal just to make it home. There was a car in the middle of our snowy driveway however, so we had to leave ours at a grocery store and have a friend give us a ride home in his truck.

Spencer and I both didn't work the next day, as both of our bosses said they wouldn't open. The following day, Spencer was picked up by his friend, but my work remained closed as they were having the parking lot plowed. I finally went back Thursday, when we opened, after feeling like a bum from such an extended break.

Storm Goliath gave Roswell a new snow record. I'm not sure what the final count was, but it was over 20inches I believe. Drifts were as tall as me in places, and icicles formed bigger than I had ever seen. I don't mind much us missing the blizzard itself, it was a good time to be out of town.

When people were finally able to get out of their homes, the stores were sold out of food, it seemed like the end of the world. Two people died in town - one from a heart attack from shoveling snow, and another found buried underneath.

We didn't have much food either, as we had emptied our fridge of things that would spoil while we were away. Also, our freezer contents seemed to have unfrozen at some point, so we had to throw them out. Luckily we had a couple cans of soup and some other things to tide us over until we were able to get out. Because we hadn't been able to get my car in to our parking lot in the first place, we could use that to run errands. His, on the other hand, was trapped for a few days more.

What was nice was having a few bonus days with my husband. It was a treat to unwind after a busy trip and just enjoy each other. We go to have our own little Christmas as well. Since we had a morning off together, we decided to have our Christmas morning then with our stockings. We had shopped for each other before we left, so all we had to do was fill our home-made stockings up at night for us to open the following morning together with breakfast. We had chosen our main gift for each other beforehand. This year we got out easy as we each picked out exactly what we wanted. He chose a nice scope for his gun for himself, and I received a much needed new computer. While these gifts give us some earthly excitement, they can not compare to the fulfillment from the best gift ever given to us.
